Born in St. Joseph,
Michigan on December 21, 1967, Steve Berkowitz didn’t discover music
until the age of 10 when his parents bought the family’s first piano.
Berkowtiz immediately excelled in lessons and a year later was to begin playing
trumpet in school. As his talent grew he began spending summers playing jazz
trumpet and then jazz piano at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. By the time he was
16, he was writing lyrics and music which were performed at school variety
shows by other singers, with Berkowtiz accompanying on piano. After moving
to Los Angeles in 1986, Berkowtiz took a break from music for many years,
only picking up instruments now and then. It wasn’t until the age of
35 that he became serious about his pursuit of writing. He attended UCLA,
studying songwriting and orchestration, at which time he found composing to
be equally as satisfying as his songwriting.
